The Princess Brides. Or maybe Grooms. Not sure yet.

When I recently shared the tale of the Two Year Olds, and its exciting sequel The Two Year Olds II: The Three Year Olds, I made a bold, public call for names befitting of our hero and heroine. I was delighted to be overwhelmed by great suggestions, many of which made me spit out my coffee. In a good way!

But in the end it was Laura Maschal who put forth Princess Buttercup and Westley from the Rob Reiner 80s classic, The Princess Bride. I casually, and accidentally, shared these names with Kathy Clark when I asked her if she’d ever seen the movie.

It was later that evening when Kathy txt’d me, asking “Have you seen Westley today? I’m a little worried about his absence.” Don’t get distracted by the drama of us thinking we’d lost yet another great peregrine adult… that happens every few days watching the cams.

No, what’s important here is that Kathy called our broken-footed king “Westly” with no sarcasm or emoji whatsoever.

Queen Kathy had spoken! There was no going back after that. And they truly are perfect names. Even though each time I call that absolute beast of a female “Princess Buttercup,” I spit out even more coffee, which is becoming a problem.

Since then, all has been well in the kingdom. We’ve been patiently, and obsessively, waiting and watching the doorway of the igloo castle to see what kinds of glorious treasures might be hiding inside.

With the recent strong winds, we finally got our first glimpse. Enjoy:

And we should all rewatch or watch The Princess Bride. You’ve got to have a heart of stone not to chuckle at that sweet film. What a pleasant contrast to the real-life drama of watching these birds.

And we gotta get up to the tower, breach the moat, and storm that castle. Because it’s still not 100% clear if we are looking at Princess Brides, Grooms, or a bit of both.
