It’s an historic evening on LBI. So historic that tomorrow we’re going to have to make poor Kashi & Emily spend the whole day rooting around dark closets at NJ Fish & Wildlife, going through moldy old boxes, scouring through faded paper sheets to find out exactly when the last time a seadog fledged a chick in Barnegat Light State Park. Because it was long before NestStory. It’s been decades.
But the skimmies did it. Plover Park did it. The Clearcut did it. A tiny three acres of beachfront was restored to its natural state and, after just one season, the black skimmers returned to their rightful place, their historic home along the inlet. And not only did they return, but they’ve succeeded and fledged their first chick.
Let’s hope this is the first of many.
I saw this beautiful bird fly tonight. For a moment I saw an island the way it was meant to be. And it was spectacular!
