Behold the flying baby

Behold the flying baby

Since the very first skimmer egg was laid in the Clearcut area of Plover Park earlier this summer, I’ve been watching the whole thing with my hands over my eyes, one eye timidly peeking through my fingers, preparing to hide myself when it all fell apart. I allowed myself to dream, but never to hope.

And we’ve still got a ways to go, so I’ll be brief. I don’t want to jinx anything here.

But we have at least eight fledged skimmer babies already, and many more in the queue. Above you can see one of our oldest, Tuxedo, practicing the delicate, precise balance of skimming along the edge of the sea.

Behold. It’s a flying baby. It’s been 30 years since we’ve seen this at the lighthouse. That’s really something.
